A street urchin from the slums of Korvosa, Mordecai survived as a cutpurse and thief. His origins unknown, Mordecai had strange, nearly silver hair, marking him as not entirely human. Other street predators quickly learned not to scuffle with Mordecai; early in his life he sent back numerous opponents bloodied and broken. This unnatural fighting ability continued to grow as Mordecai aged, and he eventually put those talents to use as a bouncer and bodyguard for various individuals; some reputable, some less so.
Mordecai has spent a number of stints acting as muscle at the Sticky Mermaid; a large, rough and tumble tavern. There he met Sarvago, an unusal patron with a penchant for keeping order in the bar. On the nights when Sarvago made an appearance, Mordecai knew that his job would be even easier than normal. And fighting roughnecks was indeed an easy task for Mordecai. Sarvago, a highly trained and disciplined blade master of the goddess Saerenrae, often questioned how Mordecai could be such an effective combatant. Cai rarely used weapons, despite the armed and dangerous clientale that frequented the Mermaid. He could never properly explain his technique to the inquisitive Sarvago; once stating, "The world slows down during a fight, and I don't really know what I'm doing. But somehow, someway, I end up standing…and they end up on the ground. That's just the way it's always been for me."
Cai has few friends. Growing up in the slums has left him socially inept; a tall, imposing figure with a flat affect and none of the empathy needed to say anything appropriate during a conversation. People tend to find him vaguely unsettling. Sarvago, one of the few people who seem comfortable around Cai, has become his most trusted friend. Mordecai looks up to Sarvago, seeing him as a redeeming force. Cai has attempted to adopt the blade master's morals and ideals, seeking to fill a void left empty during his maturation. Sarvago's influence has made Mordecai a more selective mercenary, inspiring him to avoid unsavory individuals and situations.
Recently, Sarvago enlisted Mordecai to help find a local criminal, Gaedren Lamm. Due to Mordecai's familiarity with Korvosa's shadier regions, he had heard of how children sometimes became Lamm's “helpers”. Cai plans to go back to the streets where he grew up and "persuade" one of Lamm's helpers to disclose the old codger's location. And thus the hunt began…
